Education Outside The Classroom 2015

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) is more commonly known as camp or class trips. EOTC includes planned opportunities that range in purpose from team building, personal challenge - physical, emotionally and mentally, support classroom learning, develop cultural awareness and generally provide experiences that are not possible within the four walls of a classroom.

In 2015 we are doing Waikato based activities and the following year we will be staying away overnight in a school camp situation. This alternate year programme helps to reduce overall costs and provide a variety of experiences. The 2015 programme offers a mixture of activities that encourage and balance physical challenge with personal growth, water safety and team building.

The total cost is $90 and includes all activities, transport and qualified instructors. This is payable in cash, cheque or direct credit through the office.

Waitomo Day

Individual classes will travel by bus to Stubbs Farm, just out of Waitomo, for a full day that includes caving, abseiling and a team building mystery challenge. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to challenge themselves physically and mentally as well as build strong relationships with their new classmates.

Water Safety and Education Week

Qualified swim instructors and life guards will work with students on a range of water experiences that explore water safety including snorkeling, kayaking and river safety. Four sessions will happen in our school pool with the final day being held at Water World in the dive pool.

June 27, 2014     Newsletter #3

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Thank you for the $50 deposit and to those who have paid all of their child’s camp costs. We have paid our non-refundable deposits to the Auckland Zoo and will need all payments to be made by Friday 25 July.

Dates for the two groups going are as follows:
September 3 to 4 and September 11 to 12. The groups will have approximately 30 students in each. If you have a preference for the date that your child attends, please indicate this on the slip below and we will endeavour to respect this while we organise the trips, although there can be no guarantee. This would be of particular importance, and priority will be given, to parents going along as parent helpers as we are aware that they will need to take leave from work in order to attend.

We are looking forward to taking our students on this EOTC experience that will enable them to put their scientific learning into practice as well as allowing them to deal with their classmates in a different situation.

I would prefer ____________________________ Room _______ attends the Totara team EOTC experience in Auckland on September 3 to 4 OR September 11 to 12 (Cross out the one that you do not want). I understand that this cannot be guaranteed as the two groups will need to be similar numbers.

I will/will not (cross out the one that you do not want) be able to attend the Totara team EOTC experience in Auckland as a parent helper.

21 May 2014     Newsletter #2

Dear Parents/ Caregivers/ Whanau,
Thank you for the positive response to our EOTC experience.  We currently plan to head to Auckland for the Kelly Tarlton’s /Zoo experience towards the end of term three (in the process of confirming dates) We have set our fee at $180.00 and request a deposit of $50 to be paid by June 16 (Week seven Term two) to confirm your child’s place. Alternatively, you may wish to pay the full sum then. The cost has been worked out per student and, in the event of a child not attending, a full refund may not be able to be given. The balance of $130 must be paid by the 25th of July (end of week one, term three). Numbers at the moment would lend itself to two separate groups but full payment by the due date will confirm your child’s place. In our previous letter we did state that if this trip is to go ahead a prompt payment is essential as we cannot lock in any dates without paying a deposit.

Also a big thank you to those adults who have said they can or may be able to attend. As of today, we are still awaiting confirmation from venues and buses, but as soon as we know we will send home another note detailing exact dates, so leave can be organised. It is essential that we have parent helpers so that the trip can go ahead. If this doesn’t happen we will need to cancel. Please understand that part of our new school policy will require you to fill in a form to be police vetted. We feel it is essential that you know this at this point. There may be minimal cost for adults attending as we still have to cover entry costs and we would prefer a $30 payment from each adult rather than increasing the student cost by more. We would also ask at this point that adults consider if they would also be prepared to provide a car and be emergency driver. A big ask but we require one car along with the bus. There would be some reimbursement for petrol.

At this time our programme will be a visit to Kelly Tarlton’s including a classroom session, Auckland Zoo’s overnight safari experience – dinner and breakfast provided. A packed lunch will be required for the first day. The Friday morning will see students go to Paradise Arena and we will provide morning tea and lunch. We will depart school at 9.00am and return 2.30pm the following day.

The return slip that was attached to this newsletter needs to be returned to school by Monday 26 May.

Kind regards
Joanne Parker, Julie Yeoman and Trish Scoble

April 9 2014     Newsletter #1

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

This year Totara team is planning an outdoor programme based around our science  programme. Within this there will be opportunities to extend themselves physically as well as covering content from the New Zealand Science Curriculum.

We are currently in the planning process and have three options to put to you as parents and families. You need to consider these carefully as the costs for these are quite different. Please understand that we may only run 1, 2 or 3 of the options depending on the interest. If options 1 and 2 were to go ahead we would expect payment up front (Term 2) as hefty deposits would be expected for these.

All trips would be by bus as a number of parents have concerns about transporting students who are not their own, so please understand that this will raise cost.

Option 1: Overnight trip to Auckland visiting Kelly Tarltons during the day - a packed lunch would be required - then onto Auckland Zoo for the overnight safari experience which would include dinner and breakfast.
The following day students would be given the opportunity to participate in ice skating at Paradise Skating Rink in Botany and would be provided with a lunch. We would return to school at approximately 2pm. The cost of this trip would be approximately $180.

Option 2: A long day trip starting at 7.30 am and returning at 6.30 pm. We head to Waitomo visiting the Discovery Centre, then Stubbs Farm where students will participate in 3 activities: caving, team building and abseiling, finishing with a tour of Ruakuri cave and returning to school. Students would need to bring all food and drink for the day. Approximately $100

Please note: Options 1 and 2 are costed on at least 30 students attending.

Option 3: A day trip to Hamilton Zoo leaving school at 9.00 and returning at approximately 2.00. Students would need to take all food and drink for the day. Approximately $20

Once we have indications of which trip(s) are supported, then an attendance decision and prompt payment will be required. Should your child then withdraw from the trip once decisions have been taken, refunds will be dependent on circumstances surrounding student withdrawal and may not be able to be given in full as we price based on numbers indicating they are attending. We will require parent support for all of these trips to go ahead.

This letter has been sent home with each student, please complete your selection and return to school by the end of Term One, Thursday April 17.  If you don't have the letter, a copy can be found in the link (letter 1) below.
